Inclusive Job Fair Solutions

Prompt

Design a product that solves a social or environmental issue.

Initial Research

The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is almost 2x the national average. One factor that contributes to this disparity is that disabled job-seekers do not get the same benefits that able-bodied job-seekers do from job fairs.

Some issues identified with current job fair set-ups include

  • large crowds inhibiting mobility-aid users

  • crowded spaces overwhelming those who may get overstimulated

  • long waits harming those with physical disabilities or chronic illnesses

Solution

I hoped to change the flow of job fairs by integrating new booths with a number of features:

  • Virtual queuing: job seekers can tap into virtual queues at booths, which will notify them when they can talk to the employer. This will reduce the crowds near the booths and the difficulties of waiting in line. Lights on the booth indicate the length of the queue.

  • Intentional space: the booth has curved walls to create a sense of privacy while not feeling claustrophobic.

  • Designed for sitting & standing: the queuing console and table were designed at a height that is accessible. The table is also attached to the booth at the back only, which means that employers can better connect to those in wheelchairs.

  • Screen: employers benefit from a large screen which allows them to display graphics and information.
